Support Long Leaf Opera
Dear Friends,
I am delighted share with you news of this past Festival's success, and to ask for your continuing support. Through gifts both large and small, you have played a key role in establishing this company, and we are grateful. We hope that your support will continue throughout 2010-2011.
Two seasons ago, Opera News said, “This year, Long Leaf Opera celebrates its tenth anniversary season, making it a notably enduring presence among companies that have taken on the challenge of presenting American opera.” Now, two years later, we are still here, but our economic environment has seen drastic changes.
True, as Opera News said, we aim to be "Enduring." But in this current economy, we all wonder who will endure. So many organizations are being challenged, and arts organizations are taking a particularly hard hit. As you know, opera is the most expensive of the performing arts, as it brings talented vocalists and orchestra, costumes and staging, technical crews, directors, venue and more together for a cultural experience unlike any other. Long Leaf Opera is not immune to the effects of the economic downturn, but we are being responsible about it! You may have noticed that you haven’t received the usual handsome promotional pieces this winter and we are reevaluating our venues and publicity expenses. We are also asking artists to revise their fees. All these changes are about being fiscally responsible, and stretching our budget as far as possible. We have also spent much of the winter exploring partnerships and collaborative opportunities that will result in a quality seasons while remaining a fiscally-sound and sustainable organization. All of this is necessary if we are to be Enduring.
Be assured, however, that these cost cutting measures will never alter our continuing commitment to values of:
• Artistic excellence: world-class talent presenting fully-staged English operas that stimulate the mind, address social issues and entertain our audiences;
• Inclusion: keeping ticket prices low so more people can attend, and offering free open rehearsals to community organizations serving those in need; and
• Emerging artists: Springboard new talent through our National Vocal Competition.
Your support is vital! Would you consider a generous gift to Long Leaf Opera? The Board and I pledge to you that your gift will be used wisely, and not a penny wasted. Presents needs include:
Sincerely,
Ranny Umberger
